Eventually, Aemon refused to even leave the Red Keep, leaving the day-to-day responsibilities of ruling to his Hand. His wife Theora left King's Landing for Winterfell and the king grew to be reclusive. Princess Daenerys' death sent Aemon into a deep depression, and both his relationships with his family and his rule suffered. However, she was born weak and sickly, dying three months later. In 347 AC, Queen consort Theora Stark gave birth to a girl, who Aemon named Daenerys in honour of his mother. Together with his brother as Hand, Aemon restored public confidence and support in the monarchy and personally travelled to each of the Seven Kingdoms and the Riverlands in his first few years on the throne, to foster goodwill with each of their lords. Aemon then reigned for four years as a popular and active king, in contrast with his mother who had become largely withdrawn and reclusive towards the end of her reign, after the deaths of her husband and son.

Shortly after his mother's funeral, he named his younger brother Valyx as his Hand, and his son Jaehaerys as Prince of Dragonstone. Aemon was betrothed to Theora Stark, the eldest daughter of the Lady of Winterfell, Sansa Stark, and they married when she came of age.Īemon's mother died in 343 AC and he succeeded her as king. Aemon had a sheltered childhood, with few friends besides his younger siblings, as his mother grew overprotective of her children while they were young. Upon seizing the throne in 353 AC, Rhaenys legally declared the now deceased Aemon and Jaehaerys to be illegitimate, although this was later reversed by Viserys III.Īemon was named Prince of Dragonstone shortly after his birth, though he would not rule until he came of age. This belief was supported heavily by Aemon's sister Rhaenys after his death, who claimed that he and, by extension, his son Jaehaerys were illegitimate. Believers of this theory claim that it explains the discrepancies in Aemon's birth and, if he were conceived just before the death of Jon Snow, his birth in early 306 AC would match with this timeframe. There are some who even believe that Aemon is not Justin's child, rather he is the child of Jon Snow, conceived with Daenerys just prior to his death in the War for the Dawn. This led to some believing that Aemon was conceived before Daenerys' marriage to Justin, however this could never be proven and Daenerys maintained all her life that Aemon was born very prematurely, to explain his seemingly early birth. The timing of Aemon's birth was a cause for suspicion for some lords of Westeros, as Daenerys and Justin were not seen in the months leading up to his birth, and the specific day was never made public knowledge. Daenerys named her son in honour of Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch, who her ally and ex-lover Jon Snow spoke highly of during their time together. Following his depression following the death of his daughter, Aemon grew thin, sickly and gaunt, letting his hair grow wildly.ĭuring his reign as king, Aemon wore the simple crown of Aegon III.Īemon was born in 306 AC to Queen Daenerys Targaryen in the closing months of the Crownlander Civil War, several moths after her marriage to Justin Massey. He often dressed plainly and wore his hair short. He was particularly close with his younger brother Valyx and the two frequently spent time together and discussed theology and philosophy. He deeply loved his wife Theora and his son Jaehaerys and cared for his younger siblings. Although many feared that Aemon's shyness and introverted nature would make him a poor ruler, once he was invested as Prince of Dragonstone he quickly adapted to his role and became very popular among the small folk of the island.Īlthough quiet, Aemon was kind and agreeable. Specifically, he enjoyed reading about the Dance of Dragons and the life of his uncle Rhaegar Targaryen. He was particularly interested in the history of his own dynasty. Throughout his life, Aemon had a deep interest in books and history. As a child, Aemon had no interest in swordplay or other martial affairs, areas which his younger brother Aenar excelled, and preferred to remain in his chambers, immersing himself in books. According to first-hand accounts of the time, he in no way resembled his father Justin, which only served to fuel the rumours of his disputed parentage. Aemon inherited the traditional Targaryen features of his mother Daenerys.
